In 1975, a communist regime, the Khmer Rouge, took control of Cambodia. In an attempt to establish “Year Zero,” they killed over 2 million Cambodians. Among those killed, those with an education were the first target. Wearing eyeglasses was a symbol of knowledge, education, and wealth, and were grounds for immediate killing. Cambodia has been recovering from the effects of the Khmer Rouge since their fall in 1979.

Today, many Cambodians do not receive eye care, simply because they cannot afford it. Since 2010, we have been working to change this. We work with local optometrists to provide vision screenings and eyeglasses. Optometrists will screen orphanages, schools, and children’s organizations in areas of lower income, and make custom prescription glasses for any in need. We then purchase the eyeglasses from the optometrist for about $5 a pair, and distribute them to the children and teach them appropriate eye and glasses care.

Through working with local Cambodian organizations, we are able to reach out to those with the greatest need. Over the past 5 years, we have worked with the National Centre for Disabled Persons (NCDP) of Cambodia to help distribute glasses. The NCDP finds those with significant need and organizes screenings and distributions.

Since 2012, we have been able to provide over 10,000 pairs of eyeglasses throughout Cambodia.
